Design Tinkering
So far 2008 has been a busy year for wotartist. Achieving a page rank of 6 has put the sprint in our step and we have been carefully studying all options for improvements and enhancements to our site. The most notable change has been a complete re-design of our submit, advertise, portfolio and design pages. Whether its simple age getting to me or if there is something inherently wrong with website design, but it is common for me to enter a state of panic when arriving at websites with a lot of content. My eyes will dart around in a desperate attempt to fathom out what I have to do, trying often futilely to filter this avalanche of information into something meaningful. This might well be a question of age and perhaps younger generations having been immersed in the internet from such an early age would not experience this phenomenon.
My art school training, however, taught me the value of leading a viewers eye into a painting in a logical and lyrical manner, so as not to upset the meaning and emotion that the artist wishes to convey, by a distracting or illogical set of stepping stones. Wotartist has tried at all stages in its design and development to abide by those solid lessons and to create a site that allows the art and the enjoyment of looking for art, not to be derailed by distractions caused by excessive content.
So recently we looked again at the design of our submit, advertise, portfolios and design pages and made a complete overhaul of how the information is displayed. Content is now broken down into simple headers, posed as questions, and the visitor has the choice to read further on, or not.
In the battle to pursue the idea to its logical end, this design enhancement spilled over into our "Mini portfolio" page and threw up an unexpected and valuable positive.
Parallel to this we had also been looking at ways we could better promote our portfolios pages by linking to them from our homepage. As wotartist now enjoys a page rank of 6, they could enjoy a page rank of 5, if only we could find a way to link to all of them! This caused some headaches as Google does not follow links from dropdown menus and as we have several portfolio pages, and hoping to build on that number in the future, we could not clutter our homepage menu with individual links to them all. That would be a mess of information!
So it was when looking to improve how we present information, that the solution to the portfolio pages being linked from our homepage came waddling along. Now we have one link from our homepage to our portfolio page on which we unite all portfolios under individual artist names as headers. These mini portfolios with their key word richness should bring more traffic to wotartist in the future and further exposure for the artists concerned.

New features
Those who make frequent return visits to wotartist will have noticed a few improvements recently, some minor and some really quite important. Since the beginning of the year we have been recording the number of unique visitors that our artists receive via wotartist. It was something we had planned for, for some time, but had not found the financial resources to have the necessary custom coding work done.
Between 10,000 and 20,000 unique visitors a month visit Wotartist. We have until now only been able to make rough estimates based on the number of visitors we received to our own personal websites as to the all important click through rate to wotartist artists' websites. Now we are able to watch the visits increment almost hourly and have observed how evenly they are distributed across all 800 artists. The numbers have made for a very pleasant surprise, with some artists receiving extremely healthy daily numbers. You can view the running total for external hits to artists' websites at the bottom of this page and on our "submit" page.
With so many website links on so few a number of pages, wotartist is a little more exposed to the unscrupulous spammer and scammer than most websites are. The pleasant side-affect of at last being able to implement the recording of unique visitor click through rates to artists' websites, is that now not one artist's website URL is accessible, either from within the page html nor is visible by hovering over links. All websites are therefore less vulnerable to abuse by the many automated "spider" programs that are used to extract website addresses and e-mails. As we do not store the e-mail addresses we collect on our server, our artists are pretty well protected. Artists' images are also not downloadable by right click "save as".
We have also added a "new artists" page, making it easier for return visitors to focus immediately on new content. Not forgetting to mention this page, our new "wotartist news" page, where we will keep the visitor informed of changes and on-going developments.
